Wanted Alive Majestic Sugar Maples!

What's happening to our road side sugar maple trees? Dying at a young age of 80 instead of 300 years old! What happened to our tree lined roads?

Maple Leaves Forever would like to re-establish those road side trees and make sure that they live to a ripe old age of 300 years or  more! Who are we? Well Maple Leaves forever is a charitable
organization dedicated to the protection, planting, propagation and improvement of the maple tree across Canada.

The decline in health and number of the roadside trees is related the growing requirements of the young sugar maple. Sugar maple likes to grow in the shade away from the wind and salt exposure. We are looking for prime examples of sugar maples that have survived the harsh conditions of roadsides.

Have you seen any big old sugar maple trees along the road side? Have you seen any trees that are at least 24 meters (80 feet) high with a minimum diameter of 75 cm (30 inches)? Is the crown (tree top) spread out evenly? Are there few or no broken branches? If you do find see these trees can you send us the information? Include where the tree is located and who owns it? Just fill in the questionnaire at the bottom of the page and send it to us.

Wondering what are we going to do with all this information about our heritage trees? We want to establish a breeding orchard from cuttings or seeds of those hardy heritage trees. The testing for the seed orchard will begin in the summer of 2003. In a few years time we will be able to mass-produce better adapted seedlings from the heritage trees that you have submitted! Those seedlings in turn would be available to the public at a minimum of costs!
