The Argylls >> FAQ

Q. What does the Army Reserves do?

A. The Army Reserves is a part of the Canadian Forces, and plays a vital role in the defence of Canada and the nation's interests. It is staffed by both part-time and full-time personnel. The CF Reserves current size is approximately 17,000 pers.

Q. What is the relationship between the Reserves and the Regular Forces?

A. The Reserves is a component of the Regular Force. and Reserve Force members are used to augment the Regular Force when required.

Q. Am I too old or too young to join the Reserves?

A. You need to be at least 16 years of age, and the maximum age upon enrolment is 52. Applicants under age 18 must have parental/guardian permission.

Q. Can I join if I've been convicted of a criminal offence?

A. It really depends on the type of conviction. You will likely have to seek a pardon from the courts in order to join. See the CFRC for more information.

Q. Do I need specific qualifications?

A. In order to join you must meet the basic requirements for the career path. The minimum is a grade 10 education for NCMs and Officer applicants must be currently attending college/university or have a diploma/degree.

Q. Do I need to have Canadian Citizenship to join?

A. The new policy handed-down from NDHQ states that all applicants must be Canadian Citizens. There are exceptions in which landed immigrants may apply. See the CFRC for details.

Q. How much do I get paid?

A. It all depends on ranks, qualifications, and time-in. See >> here << for details.

Q. Will I have travel opporunities?

A. The short answer is yes. You will have opportunities to travel to the US as well as to other NATO countriesn such as the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. You may also have an opportunity to go on a peace-keeping tour. Travel is voluntary. See the unit recruiter for details.

Q. Will the Army Reserves improve my employability?

A. The simple answer is YES! You will be trained in a range of skills, including communications, weapons, transport, time-management, leadership and team building. The Argylls is a perfect unit for those interested in a career in law enforcement, as we train in urban operations (similar to what emergency response teams do).

Q. How much time do I have to commit to the Army Reserves?

A. It really depends on what you want to get out of the experience. Obviously, the more you put in, the more you will get out of the army. For example, you receive pay increases when you complete courses and increase qualifications. However, you should aim for at least a 75% attendance for training and other unit obligations. Anything less, you are letting the team, and yourself, down. Members who do not train regularly may be involuntarily released from the military.

Q. Can I leave the Army at any time?

A. Yes, you can. There is no penalty from releasing from the Reserves, and their is no obligation to serve or a contract of service.

Q. Will I get called-up to fight in a war or go on tour?

A. Currently, you have to volunteer to go on operation. However, the Canadian Parliament has the right to mobilize the Reserves in time of war, although this would only be done in an extremely serious event.

Q. How do I join?
