THE GODS OF THE VALLEYS ARE NOT THE GODS OF THE HILLS

The Argylls is the only LFCA unit that specializes in mountain operations.

We are also the only LFCA reserve unit that sends its troops to the US ARMY MOUNTAIN WARFARE TRAINING SCHOOL (USAMWTS) at Mt. Jericho, Vermont, for both individual and unit-level training and qualification.

At the USAMWTS, Argyll soldiers train in both individual and unit mountain skills, with primary emphasis on the development of overall combat capability in high altitude, rugged terrain.

Mountain Ops

As a part of the Basic Mountain Warfare Qualification, troops will participate in a two-week summer and two-week winter mountain ops course.

Physically demanding, the winter course is conducted in an inherently dangerous environment with an emphasis on safety, individual survival, cold weather bivouacs, route selection and marking, over-snow mobility techniques, combat support planning, and avalanche safety and awareness. Troops will apply unit-level offensive / defensive tactics in field exercises representing real-life scenarios.

Mountain Ops

The summer mountain operations course emphasizes individual and unit-level mountaineering skills necessary for successful operations in a mountainous environment. Troops will learn mountain safety, military rock climbing, fixed rope installations, mountain navigation, rappelling, and planning / coordinating platoon movement across rugged terrain. Small unit exercises and training will provide opportunities for students to apply offensive and defensive mountain combat tactics.

Mountain Ops

Other specialized training includes sniper sustainment training, assault climbing, tactical rope suspension, animal packing, assault weapons, swift water rescue, mountain communications, mountain motor support, and recce sustainment.
