How to Apply >> A Guide for Officer Applicants

The first thing you need to know about officer applications is that it is a competitive process.

Although you may match the basic eligibility, you may not be chosen for an officer position in the unit. This is especially true of the Argylls, as we tend to pick the best applicants. Approximately 80% of all applicants are either not chosen for processing, or are asked to apply as an NCM to gain experience in the ranks.

Opportunity Knocks >>

In some cases, some officer applicants may be asked to enter as an NCM in the first-instance before becoming an officer.

This may be due to a lack of hands-on experience, or a lack of knowledge about the military and the infantry.

Do not look upon this as a rejection (it most certainly is not), but rather as an opportunity to get some quality hands-on military experience and training, as well as an opportunity to get to know the troops that you may end up leading.

How Long Does It Take?

Please note that the process to become an officer is long. You need to do at least three interviews at the unit level before starting the application at the Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre.

In total, the process to become an officer can take between one and six months, depending on the time of application, your experience and background, and your medical fitness.

But, don't let the long application process deter you from applying. If you think you've got what it takes, send in your resume and cover-letter ASAP to get the ball rolling.

We will do everything we can to quickly process your file. Give us a call today at 905.541.ARMY for more information.

Step-By-Step Process >>

  1. Fax or email your resume and cover-letter to the Argyll Recruiting Officer. Make sure you clearly outline the reasons why you want to be an officer in the Argylls.
  2. Call 905-541-ARMY to schedule an interview with the unit Recruiting Officer. Be prepared to talk about your goals and interests.
  3. If all is good, you will be asked to meet with the Commanding Officer.
  4. If the Commanding Officer approves your application, you will then be asked to sit for an Officer Board. An officer board is comprised of at least five serving officers, and they will ask you a range of situational and intellectually chanllenging questions.
  5. If you pass the Officer Board, you will then be asked to formally apply. You will need to complete the application form, and submit it to the Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre and to complete and pass all of the tests/examinations.
  6. If you pass all the tests, you will then be offered employment with the unit.

Officer Criteria >> The Qualities We Are Looking For

In addition to the basic criteria listed >> here <<, you must also possess leadership and analytical skills, as well as problem-solving skills and a knack to handle stressful situations.

We are also looking for people who are physically fit, intellectual, and for people who can handle multiple high-stress situations simultaneously, can communicate well with others, and are professionally minded.

The competition is tough, and the simple reality is that not all applicants will become Argyll officers.

WARNING: YOU NEED TO BE PHYSICALLY FIT!

It takes a long time, and it costs a lot, to train an officer. As a result, we will only take the best officer applicants. You need to be both psychologically capable and physically fit. If you are not, we will not accept your application for further processing.

Although the CF has certain physical standards, The Argylls normally demand a higher level of fitness and athletic capability of its officer applicants.

The following is a general guideline for physical fitness for Argyll officer applicants:

  • 2.4 KM (1.5 mile) run in less than 14 minutes
  • 5 KM run in less than 35 minutes
  • 25 X military push-ups
  • 30 X military sit-ups
  • 20 X 90 degree-break chin-ups
  • Bench press at least 75% of your own body weight
  • Be able to carry 100 lbs for 100 metres
