Macintosh OS Classic e-mail clients

Filtering SPAM in Outlook Express 4

The Outlook Express e-mail client can be configured to read incoming e-mail headers and filter messages to different folders based on these headers. E-mails that pass through Sentex, and are considered to be SPAM, are marked as having SPAM content in the hidden header area of the message.

To have Outlook Express transfer the suspected SPAM e-mails to a “suspected_spam” folder, follow these steps:

  1. Start Outlook Express

  2. In the Outlook Express window, select the area where you would like to place a new mail folder.

  3. Select New, and then Folder from the File menu.

  4. A new folder titled untitled folder will appear.

  5. Edit the folder name by typing (without the quotes) “suspected_spam”.

  6. Select Mail Rules... from the Tools menu.

  7. Click the button New Rule.

  8. In the Rule Name field, type (without the quotes) “SPAM Filter”.

  9. Only check the option Apply to incoming.

  10. In the Criteria section, on the first pull-down menu of the first row, select Specific Header.

  11. In the Header Name field, type (without the quotes) “X-Spam-Status:”.

  12. In the Criteria section, on the second pull-down menu of the first row, type (without the quotes) “Yes” and click Add.

  13. In the Action section, on the first row, select Move message.

  14. Next to the Move message option, select suspected_spam from the pull-down menu.

  15. Click OK to close the Define Mail Rule window.

  16. In the Then section, select Move message and select the folder suspected_spam.

  17. Click OK.

To view the hidden e-mail headers do the following:
After you select or open a message, select View Source from the View menu.
