Filtering SPAM in Microsoft Outlook 2002

The Outlook 2002 e-mail client can be configured to recognize incoming e-mails with headers that suggest the e-mail is Spam.

To have Outlook 2002 transfer the suspected SPAM e-mails to the folder “suspected_spam”, follow these steps:

  1. Start Outlook 2002.

  2. Select Rules Wizard from the Tools menu.

  3. Select Inbox as the folder.

  4. Click New.

  5. Select “Start from a blank rule” then click Next.

  6. Select “Check messages when they arrive” then click Next.

  7. Check the option “with specific words in the message header”.

  8. In the Rule description box, click on the link specific words.

  9. Type (without the quotes) “Spam-Status: Yes” and click Add.

  10. Click Add then OK.

  11. Click Next.

  12. Check the options “stop processing more rules” and “move it to the specified folder”.

  13. In the Rule description box, click on the link specified.

  14. Click on New to define a new folder and the Create New Folder Window will appear.

  15. Select where to place the folder. Note: IMAP users may wish to select an online folder.

  16. Type (without the quotes) “suspected_spam” in the Name field.

  17. Click OK.

  18. Select the suspected_spam folder, then click OK.

  19. Click Next - twice.

  20. Specify the name (without the quotes) “SPAM Filter” as the rule name.

  21. Click Finish.

To view the hidden e-mail headers do one of the following:
After you have selected or opened a message, select Options from the View menu. The headers are displayed in the Internet headers field.
Right-click on a message in your inbox or another folder and select Options. Again, the headers are displayed in the Internet headers field.
