USS Welfen NCC 9011A, Bondar Class Starship
Dr. Nesta Rhiannon Dr. Nesta Rhiannon (created by Frances Peate) has served as Chief Medical Officer aboard the USS Welfen since it was first commissioned. She holds dual citizenship to the Federation and Keltia, her home government whose roots are in the now dead Calonden Empire (Original Series) and Preserver-transplanted pre-Roman Celts of Earth. The Kelts, as they are now known, hold extensive territory in what used to be the Empire.

A Day in the Life of Dr. Nest Rhiannon
By Frances Peate

Nesta Rhiannon woke to the sound of her alarm. Lights suffused her quarters softly like the dawn on her home world. It was 0530. After a short period of meditation she went for an invigorating swim.

She was joined for breakfast by her distant kinswoman Olwen Aeron, the First Officer. They talked of mutual acquaintances and distant kin while Nesta prepared a traditional Keltic meal.

Nesta brought the food to the table and sat down. They ate in silence for a few minutes. The edge taken off their appetites they began to discuss vacation plans.

"If we visit Anu Modron we can stay with my family," Nesta suggested. Her friend sighed quietly. "Olwen, I know it will be difficult for you to go back, but I think you need to face that part of your past."

Olwen looked up from her herbal tea as she considered what had been said and replied, "I know Nesta but I'm not sure I'm ready." She smiled slightly. "You've never been to Ro-Ech. We could stay with my family. Or," her smile widened, "we could go to Rosemert. I could use some time on a tropical paradise."

At 0650, Dr. Sarkek looked up from his scientific journal to see the Chief Medical Officer enter her office where she checked the duty roster.

At 0700, Dr. Rhiannon ad the other day staff heard the report given by Dr. McAllister.

"At 0230, Ensign Tzu, 69 year old human female, called Sick Bay complaining of abdominal cramps, dizziness and nausea. She was brought in and diagnosed with Kalleriann Flu. She is responding well to treatment and is expected to discharged this evening. She should be responding to return to duty in 2-3 days.

At 0345, Lieutenant Born, a 35 year old Bolean male, reported to Sick Bay. He had dislocated his left shoulder kayaking on the Holodeck. He was treated and released. He will report to Auxiliary Medical tomorrow for further treatment."

Dr. McAllister concluded the night report and the day shift commenced. Dr Rhiannon returned to her office after rounds to complete one of the Surgical Simulation Schedules and read the Engineering Specs on a variation of the Bio-Bed.

At 0930 she had ann appointment with Dr. Dragoman. As the last of the departments to be established , his staff had to treat patients as they organized. After discussing the challenges with Dr. Dragoman and his team, she stayed to observe the physiotherapy session of a crewmember seriously injured of a recent away- team mission. She thanked them for their help and commended them on their hard work and progress under difficult circumstances.

At 1045, she gave an archery lesson.

After showering she joined Mandaema Bloss and Bevin Tor for lunch in the Circle. Lt. Korg Pallara stopped at their table as the Lieutenant leaving. He reminded them of the Klingon Opera which was being presented that evening.

"I would consider it an honour if you would be my guests for and the opera this evening. The First Officer and other senior staff will be there and Captain Bruce will be there if she is back from her conference."

They assured him that they would be very happy to attend and final arrangements were made. Mandaema watched as Korg made his way out of the Circle. She looked at Nesta and Bevin.

"Have you ever attended a Klingon opera before?" she asked, rather hesitantly.

"No," Nesta replied, "but I think I will enjoy it. The Captain was saying that the stories of romance and heroic deeds are larger than life. We Kelts do not sing inn the operatic form but our bards do compose songs and poems based on the myths and legends of our people."

Mandaema spoke thoughtfully, "I'm sure the opera will be very enjoyable."

"Yes," added Bevin Tor, "but what's for dinner?"

After lunch Dr. Rhiannon and Counsellor Bloss joined other members of staff for a seminar: CULTURE AND MYTHOLOGY: THEIR EFFECT ON FIRST CONTACT; led by the Civilian Cultural Advisor, Calandra of Len. Shortly after the opening remarks Dr. Rhiannon was summoned to Sick Bay. An emergency call from Main Engineering informed them that several crew members had been injured.

Dr. Standing Bear and an Emergency Medical Team had gone immediately to perform triage. Dr. Standing Bear had the two most critically injured beamed directly to Sick Bay. The Team remained in Engineering to care for the other wounded crew.

The injuries were the result of a power surge through a faulty relay. This caused the sublinear chips to shatter.

Dr. Rhiannon assessed their injuries. They had third degree burns to 30% of their bodies and fragments of the radioactive crystal imbedded in their chest and faces. Dr. Rhiannon stabilized their conditions and readied them for surgery while the specialists prepared.

Chief Engineer Belgai Nikonersee and three other crew members arrived at Sick Bay a hour later. They received further treatment for their injuries. While he was treated, Lieutenant Nikonersee was given a full report on the condition of his two crew. greatly relieved that both would make a full recovery, he was ordered to go to his quarters and get some rest.

The crises over, Dr. Rhiannon returned to her office, where she completed her logs and reports.

Afterwards she took a few minutes for a walk in the Arboretum to relax before getting ready for the evening's entertainment.

Before the evening could begin for her however, she returned to Sick Bay to monitor the conditio of the patients.

She spoke to both ad was able to reassure them that their prognosis was excellent and they would recover fully.

Commander Aeron also came to Sick Bay to see how they were. After speaking to them she consulted with Dr. Rhiannon on their condition. Lieutenant Tzu was getting ready for return to her quarters. She stated she "felt fine but a little weak" and gladly accepted Dr Rhiannon and Commander Aerons' offer to accompany her o their way to Holodeck Three.

There, Lieutenant Pallara welcomed his many guests to a "Klingon Banquet".

Captain Bruce had just returned and she and Lieutenant Pallara assisted the others with their meal choices.

Later, the Captain sat down next to Dr. Rhiannon.

"Well,Nesta, how was your day?"

Nesta smiled as she replied, "relatively quiet, but interesting."
