Family History Details
Alternate spellings: The Bowles name was spelt Boles and Bowels in various records for the period. O'Brien was listed also as O'Brion, and in the marriage records, Bernard's name erroneously transcribed as Barnard and Eliza's name was erroneously entered into the provincial registry as Isabella.
Bernard was described as a mechanic from Port Perry in his marriage registry and later was described as a stonemason, and the family lived in the village of Port Perry [4] in the 1880s and 1890s. Eliza was also residing in Port Perry at the time of marriage. They were married by Reverend P. J. Keane. The marriage was not registered with the province until the following year. Witnesses to the marriage were Eliza's sister Rebecca and Bernard's brother Martin.
Sometime before 1901 (census) they moved to Markham where they were living as boarders. After Bernard's death, Eliza went to Welland, Ontario to live with her daughter Ellen's family at 26 York Street [1].
Eliza refused to register to receive her old age pension until she was in her eighties (having been eligible since age 70), as she considered it to be welfare [1].
Catherine's husband J. Hennessee was from the area between Lindsay and Peterborough [1] and he worked for the Eaton's Company in Toronto for many years, receiving a gold pocket watch for his service there [11].
