Family History Details
Alfred was born out of wedlock and thus bore the same surname as his mother. His mother
was a foundling whose birth name was unknown, and thus she bore the surname of
the Foster family who raised her [1].
The names of his parents have been deduced from census records - - in 1861 and 1871, Alfred
lived with Eli and Mary Ann Holdham and their
younger children. He was listed as Eli's stepson
and thus probably Mary Ann's son. In 1891 and 1901,
Alfred's son Ernest Foster
lived at the home of Henry Wrigley, and was listed as Henry's
grandson. Ernest's maternal grandfather was James Swallow,
therefore Henry must have been his paternal grandfather,
Alfred Foster's father.
In 1881 (census), Alfred Foster and family lived at Baghill, West Ardsley, West Yorkshire.
In 1901 (census), this family lived at Soothill Upper, West Yorkshire.
Alfred was a coal miner, although in his younger years he apprenticed as a wire drawer.
Many of the the Foster children were fair-haired - - Albert and Annie were red-heads and Ada was
blonde. [1]
Harry Foster played violin, and his wife Mabel played piano. She was a parson's daughter.
Annie Garner (Foster) was known for her ginger wine. Elsie Holmes (Foster) was an invalid for much
of her adult life. Jim Foster's son-in-law Wilf Parkin was an organist and violinist at
York Minster cathedral.
