Family History Details

In 1881 (census) this family lived at 2 Templeview Terrace, Leeds, West Yorkshire. In 1884 when Horace was born [18] , they lived at 27 Industrial Street, North Leeds, West Yorkshire. By 1891 (census) they had relocated to the hamlet of Chidswell, in Soothill Upper, West Yorkshire, in the parish of Hanging Heaton, and they were still at that location at the time of the 1901 census, and when Alfred Foster Revell used to visit them as a boy circa early 1920s [1].

John's occupation was listed in the censuses as Coal & Ironstone Miner. He started work in the mines at age 7 and worked in them until he was 73. John never went to school, and both John & Martha remained illiterate. Alfred Revell remembers visiting his grandparents John and Martha, and Horace Revell would read the newspapers to them. In his old age, John enjoyed going to the cinema to see the latest pictures [1].

Before marriage, the 1871 census recorded Martha as being employed at "pieces at mill".
