In 1881 (census), this family lived at 44 Long Row, Farnley, West Yorkshire. Rufus worked as both a portrait painter and coal miner in 1881 and by the 1890s became a professional photographer. A number of the early Revell photographs were taken by Rufus. Ellen was listed as a "pupil teacher" (training to be a teacher?). Rufus's infant niece Sarah (7 months old) born at Wortley was also living with the family.
