Family History Details
Hamlet enlisted in the British Army on February 23, 1915, at Wigan, Lancs. as Private No 26439 in the 1st Battalion of the Kings (Liverpool) Regiment. After training, he was sent to the Western Front in France, where he arrived September 20, 1915. His battalion was involved in a number of battles during the time Hamlet was with them. Hamlet was listed as killed in action on September 2, 1916, at or near the Somme, and is commemorated on the Thičpval Memorial to the missing at Thičpval, France (as he has no known grave).
Hamlet's recorded date of death raises questions, since on that date his battalion was " out of the line" in training at Couin, France. For him to have been killed in action on that date, he may have been attached temporarily to another unit, or perhaps there was an accident. Another possibility is that the date is incorrect. The regimental diary does not mention any 1st battalion casualties on that date, however Hamlet's battalion did suffer casualties the following day (September 3, 1916) when they returned to the front line.
