Family History Details

This family lived at 29 Shaw Street, Great Bolton, Lancashire at the time in 1890 when William Clifford was born [18]. However the following year (1891 census) they were at 28 Laburnum Street, Bolton, Lancs. Laburnum Street no longer exists [7].

In 1901 (census), the family lived at 2 Diggle Street, Wigan.

As a young man, William was on the stage as an entertainer, and later in life was employed as an iron turner [10] [18]. He worked for Walker Bros. (Wigan) Pagefield Iron Works, Wigan, a major general engineering firm that built steam locomotives and mining machinery.

On William Clifford's reissued birth certificate, the family name is spelled "Tootill" [18].

Margaret and William were known to grandchildren as "grandma and grandpa shop". Margaret was a shopkeeper before marriage [10], like her father, presumably in his shop. After William retired from the mill, he and Margaret opened a grocery and candy shop. At this point they lived at 30 Ratcliffe Street, Wigan [1].

William's listed primary cause of death was acute bronchitis (secondary: senility), at 75 Frog Lane UD. At the time of his death, he resided at 23 Margaret Street, Wigan [8].
