Family History Details
In 1851 (census), John Sherlock was a tin plate worker like his father, living with his family at 21 Moor Lane, Bolton, Lancashire. Alice was living with her family at 54 Crop Street, Bolton, in 1851 (census) at 64 Soho Street, Bolton, in 1861 (census).
By 1861, John was working as a coppersmith for his father Hugh Sherlock (one of 5 men and 5 boys employed). At this time they lived at 45 Newport Street, Bolton.
By 1871, John was working as a coppersmith independently from his father, with two men and two apprentices working for him, and living with his own family at 64 Soho Street, Bolton (Holy Trinity parish, Exchange ward). At this time, the Sherlock's had a servant living with them, a 16-year old girl from Liverpool named Mary J. Haslam.
John & Alices's family was still at 64 Soho Street at the time of the 1881 census, but by this time John's occupation was shopkeeper, and Margaret and Emma were shop assistants. Young Lilley was employed as a dress maker [10].
After John's death, Alice was still operating the shop at 64 Soho (1891 cesus). Clara was working as a domestic housekeeper and Hugh Philip as a house painter. By 1901, Hugh was married and living at 97 Clarendon Street, Bolton, and working as an iron hammer maker. The widowed Alice was living with her son and his family.
One of the Sherlock sisters (Clara or Emma?) emigrated to Australia. [1]
