1871 Census: William, Jane, Ruth, Elizabeth A., Matthew, William III, and Mary J. all at 38 Shaw Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Agnes and Susanna not listed in the household. William was a glass maker, Ruth and Elizabeth cotton weavers.

William and Jane, as well as children Matthew, William III and Mary Jane, were still residing at 38 Shaw at the time of both the 1881 census. There was another Tootell family next door at 40 Shaw (Bertha Tootell).

William Tootell II's occupation was still listed as glass house pot maker. Matthew was a coal miner in 1881, and Mary Jane was a cotton weaver [10].

William Tootell II was baptised as a Roman Catholic but his children were baptised and raised in the faith of the Church of England, as were subsequent generations.
