Family History Details
On William Clifford's birth certificate, the family name is spelled "Tootill"
[18].
His family lived at 29 Shaw Street, Great Bolton, Lancashire at the time of his
birth [18].
Angelina Bagguley's brother Hamlet Bagguley Jr.
was killed in action at the Battle of the Somme in World War I.
William Clifford and Angelina lived at 153 Margarets Street Wigan until late 1916,
[1] then 16 Pagefield Street Wigan
[1] to about 1928, and then at 8 Fir Grove,
Beech Hill, Wigan [1] until Angelina's death in 1947
[8]. Phyllis and Alfred also lived in the
house on Fir Grove during the early war years when they were first married
[1].
Angelina's primary causes of death were listed on the death certificate
as bronchial pneumonia and chronic ulcerative colitis
[8], however there was
great controversy over this since she had entered the hospital
in Wigan for relatively low risk surgery (prolapsed womb?) but afterwards
fell gravely ill and was transferred to Fazakerley where she
later died. The hospital was never able to give the family a satisfactory
explanation of why she had died so suddenly, and the reported official cause
seemed inconsistent with the apparent circumstances
[1].
There is a family anecdote about how Angelina's father-in-law,
William Tootell III, was nearly accidentally
buried next to Angelina rather than next to his own wife
Margaret. The coffin had to be raised up again and
moved to the correct gravesite.
William Clifford and Angelina (Nan) were great-grandparents of the
author of this site.
