| Search engine optimization isn’t complicated, but it can be time-consuming. If you are on a tight budget, you can probably make many of the most effective steps yourself – I’ll even tell you how! But if your time is better spent building your business, you will almost certainly be better off with an experienced web designer, who can make the changes that will dramatically boost traffic to your site. And if you are hiring me to design your site, it’s much more cost-effective to incorporate search engine optimization from the beginning! There are basically four steps to search engine optimization:
1. finding the right keyphrasesKeyphrases are specific terms that users enter into search engines, for which you want your site to appear in the search results. Search engine optimization involves finding the keyphrases that are entered most often, and have the least competition, for your type of website. I use Wordtracker to find the most effective keyphrases for your site, and then optimize it for those search terms.
2. embedding the keyphrasesOnce I know which keyphrases to use, the next step is to embed them into the pages of your site. Usually I will optimize each page for one or two different keyphrases, planting them in the body text, meta tags, link and alt text, etc. That way, every page can act as a gateway to your website, each for a different search term. It is generally more effective to optimize your site for a spectrum of keyphrases than to try to achieve a #1 ranking for one particular search term. Once your site is online and its search engine listings have been updated, your ranking can be improved even more by comparing your site with higher-ranking pages (if any!) for each keyphrase. I use WebPosition to automate this process and further improve each page’s search engine ranking.
3. submitting to search enginesThere are plenty of bogus submission services that will tell you they submit to 500 search engines or more. The truth is that there just aren’t that many search engines! And some of the most important engines give much better results if they are submitted to manually. I make manual site submissions wherever it’s beneficial, and use selfpromotion.com for automated submissions. A little extra time spent on quality site submissions is definitely worthwhile, both for a better ranking and to minimize the time it takes to get your site listed!
4. increasing link popularityThere is a growing trend in search engines to use link popularity as a factor in site rankings. This means that the more sites link to yours, the higher your ranking will be on many of the most popular search engines. There are a number of ways to improve your link popularity. Link exchanges are a very effective method – this involves adding links to related websites, then asking them to provide reciprocal links back. This process helps you both, and many webmasters are happy to exchange links with other quality sites. I use a program called Arelis to help find and work with link exchanges. I can also have your site listed in directories, guides, guestbooks and forums as well. It takes some time and effort to increase your link popularity, but it is almost always a highly cost-effective investment, since the increased traffic that it generates will give your sales a big boost!
Each of these steps is fairly straightforward, and if you have the time and patience to learn how to do it yourself, you should be able to get pretty good results on your own. But for as little as US $200 I can provide you with basic search engine optimization that will boost your site traffic fast, and let you focus on your own core business expertise!
