Although Persians were my first love, Himalayans specifically, when I first stumbled into the cat fancy in December 1972 because of a Christmas kitten, I currently only work with them on a very small scale.

I left the world of longhairs for a few years, but returned again in the early 90s when I discovered a black male kitten for sale in the cage next to me at a small show in Canton OH. After the show I lost track of the exhibitor, who lived somewhere in the hills of West Virginia. Fortunately, I found him again at another Ohio show a couple of months later. He still had the kitten for sale and I was still interested, so I bought it. A short time later, I and the co-owner, Doreen Linfield of DORALIN Himalayans and Persians, granded the black male, GRC Pawprintz Double Play (a.k.a Short Stop). The exhibitor who sold 'Short Stop' to me was none other than Manuel Fekete of CATTRAX Persians.

The following January at a Midwest Persian Tabby show in Dearborn MI, I fell in love with the tortoiseshell pictured above. Needless to say, Manny was willing to entrust her to my care and later that spring she finished her grand at the Cat Nation Fanciers show in Erie PA. This was no easy feat. Let me explain why...

While getting ready to leave for the show in the wee hours that morning, I put a pot of fresh coffee to perk on the gas stove and I made a quick trip out to the car. When I returned, I went to fill my thermos and noticed a strange smell in the air.

I've done enough protein experiments with the kids at school to recognized the smell of burnt ... H-A-I-R!

Sure enough there was Summer sitting next to the coffee pot looking as innocent as could be. When I picked her up charred cat hair flew through the air. I examined her and discovered that one entire side of her body had charred fur. I combed and combed, but didn't think there was much hope of finishing her grand that weekend, not only did was her beautiful coat a mess, but it smelled pretty bad too!

I decided to take her with me to the show since I was committed to going anyway. I groomed her as best I could and decided to try her in a ring or two. After all, she only needed a few points. It was worth a try. Lo and behold, she took the Breed and Best CH in her first ring and finalled in the second ring. That was enough to finish her. I was truly amazed and delighted. I guess it helped that the side that had been charred was usually the one turned away from the judges when they put her on the table.

Anyway, that's how Summer finished her grand and why her hot tortie daughter was named Kitao's Singe Benefits.
