=================================== King's Quest I: Quest for the Crown =================================== Solution by David Tanguay (dat@thinkage.on.ca) ------- General ------- This solution is not a proper walkthrough. It is intended to highlight the actions required to achieve various goals. In a real game, these action sequences would intermingle with each other and generic treasure gathering. The coordinates used in this solution are shown in the map at the end. Points for each action are given in square brackets. The alternative solutions will win the game, but with fewer points. I was able to get 159 (out of 158!) points with the primary solutions. -------- Prologue -------- Cross the bridge to the castle, and walk around the front to the door. Open the door [1], and walk along the hall to the king. Bow to the king [3]. Talk to the king: you must find the shield, the mirror, and the chest. ---------- The Mirror ---------- Go to the birch forest at C5. Move the rock [2]. Look in the hole and get the dagger [5]. Go to the well at A6. Cut the rope, taking the bucket [2]. Lower the rope and climb down [1]. Dive at the bottom [2], incidently filling the bucket with water [2], and swim to the hole on the right [1]. Get close to the dragon (but not too close!) and throw the water [-2+7]. The dragon runs off in shame. Get the mirror [8]. (Exit back into the well -- see Other Points below.) <> ---------- The Shield ---------- Go to the gingerbread house at A2. Eat the house [2]: if you hear the witch, leave, return and eat again, until the witch isn't home. Open the door and enter. Open the cupboard [2] and get the cheese [2]. Walk around until you hear the witch, then go to the bedroom and wait. When the witch comes and is busy preparing the stove, walk up behind her and push her in [7]. (Get the note in the bedroom -- see Other Points below.) <> Go to the clover patch at F1 and get the four-leaf clover [2]. Go to D2 and get the bowl [3] and fill [2] it. Go in the cottage (@D3). Give the bowl to the man [3] and get the fiddle [3], avoiding the holes in the floor. Go to H1 and wait for the bird. Jump at the bird when it comes near, until you grab it [3]. It will take you to the hole at E4. Get the mushroom at D4 [1]. Go down the hole, and on to the rat. Give the rat the cheese [2], but be careful not to get too close. Go through to the alcove. Play the fiddle [3]. Go south to the throne room and get the shield [8] and the sceptre [5]. Go west to the hole in the wall. Eat the mushroom [2] and go through the hole [1]. --------- The Chest --------- Pick up a carrot from the garden [2]. Open the pen gate, walk to the goat, and show him the carrot [5]. The goat will now follow you around. Go to a troll bridge at F2, F4, or G3 and the goat will butt away the troll [4]. Talk to the old gnome and guess his name [5]: depending on the game version, either "ifnkovhgroghprm" ("rumplestiltskin" mapped with a->z, b->y, etc), or "nikstlitselpmur" (both from "think backwards" in the witch's note). Pick up the beans [4]. Go to F6, until your fairy godmother gives you a spell. Go to the wildflower patch at H3 and plant the beans [2]. Carefully (save often!) climb the beanstalk. Above the clouds, go east to the giant: the spell will protect you. Walk around until the giant falls asleep [7], then take the chest from the sleeping giant [8]. Return down the beanstalk. (Get the sling before going down: see Other Points below.) <> <> ------------ Other Points ------------ After disposing of the dragon, go back out through the hole to the well [2]. Also, refill the bucket with water [2] (this implicitly happens when you go back into the well bottom, or swim anywhere). There is a note in the witch's bedroom. Pick it up [2] and read it [1]. Pick up the pebbles at D3 [1]. Above the clouds, go south from the cave entrance. Go to the hole in the tree, look inside, and get the sling [2]. Talk to the elf at D1. He gives you a magic ring [3]. Look in the stump at H5. Get the pouch [4] and open it [4]. Climb the oak at C6. Walk to the nest and get the egg [8]. Get a walnut from C2 [3]. Open it, revealing a gold nut [3]. -------- Epilogue -------- Go to the castle. Open the door [1]. Bow to the king [3]. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Main Kingdom Map +--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+ | Well |Clearing| Oak | Garden |Clearing| Goat Pen | | | | | | | | | | 6 | | wolf | | | | | | | | bucket | | egg | carrot | carrot | god- | | goat | | | | | | | mother | | | +--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+ | Lake | Birch | Castle | Lake | Water- | Stump | | | | Forest | | | | Falls | | 5 | | | | | | | | | | | | rock | door | | | | pouch | | | | | | | | | | +--------+--------+--------+##################--------+--------+--------+ | Cottage |Flowers | River | Hole # Bridge | Bridge | Lake | | | | | # | # | | | 4 | | | ogre | # | # | | | | door | | | #mush-| # | | | | fiddle | | | #room | # | | | +--------+--------+--------+--################--------+--------+--------+ | Lake |Hole in | Forest | River | River #| Gnome | Bridge |Flowers | | |Boulder | | | #| | | | 3 | | | dwarf | | #| gnome | | | | | | |pebbles | #| | | | | | | | | #| | | | +--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+ | House | Forest | Walnut | Forest | River | Bridge | River | Tree | | | | Tree | | | | | | 2 | |sorceror| | | | | | | | | | walnut | bowl | | | | | | | | | | | | | | +--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+ | Forest | Lake | Door | Lake | Clover | Lake | Cave | | | | | | | | | | 1 | witch | | | elf | | | | | | | | | | | | | bird | | | | | | | | | | +--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+ A B C D E F G H Above the Clouds +--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+ | Top of | | | Giant | | Top of | | Bean- | | | | | Stairs | | stalk | | | giant | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | +--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+--------+ | | | Hole | | | | | | | | | | | | sling | | | | | +--------+--------+--------+
