================================== King's Quest III: To Heir is Human ================================== Solution by David Tanguay (dat@thinkage.on.ca) ------- General ------- There are several places where you have to wait for some random event, or leave and return something until it occurs: e.g., the bears, the eagle, the bandit. Save the game before waiting, and restore if too much time passes. There's no rigid order to the gathering of the ingredients and the making of the spells. There are two periods, while Manannan is away and then asleep, in which you must get the porridge and make the cat transformation cookie. You can pursue the rest after Manannan has been defeated. --------- Beginning --------- Go to the dining room and get the cup [1]. Go to the kitchen and get the food on the table [1+1+1], the knife [1], the spoon [1], and the bowl [1]. Do the chores Manannan assigns you. As 5:00 approaches, hang around outside his bedroom, until he announces that he is going on a trip. You have until 30:00 to gather the things you need. -------------------------------- Gathering Ingredients: The House -------------------------------- When the opportunity presents itself, catch the cat (it may take several tries) and get its fur [1]. Go into Manannan's room. Open the vanity drawer and get the mirror [1]. Look on top of the closet to find the key [3]. Open the closet and look behind the clothes to find the map [7]. Close the closet and go to the dresser. Open the drawer to get the rose petal essence [1]. Go up the tower and get the fly for its wings [1]. Go to the study and open the cabinet, getting the magic wand [4]. Move the books on the bookshelf and pull the lever [5] revealing the stairs. Go down to the workshop. Pick up all the ingredients from the back shelf: powdered fish bone [1], nightshade juice [1], mandrake root powder [1], saffron [1], toad spittle [1], toadstool powder [1]. Go to the book and turn to page iv and make the "Flying Like an Eagle or Fly" spell [10]. Go back to the study, pull the lever, move the books, and return the wand to the cabinet, all so Manannan doesn't get suspicious. Go outside to the chicken coop. Open the gate, catch a chicken, and get a feather [1]. Go down the path to Llewdor. ------------------------------ Gathering Ingredients: Llewdor ------------------------------ Whenever the eagle passes overhead and drops a feather, pick it up [2]. This might happen at the bottom of the path, along the stream just east, and on the bluffs south of town (maybe elsewhere, too). Teleport to the bottom of the path and go east to the stream. Get mud [1] from the banks. Go east into the sea and get water [1]. Go to the town and enter the tavern. Dip the fly wings into the essence and listen to the bandits talk about their hideout [3]. Return to human form. Go outside and south to the bluffs and get the mistletoe [1]. Go west to the bears' house. Go back east and return, until you see the bears leave for a walk in the woods. Go into the house and get the small bowl of porridge [2]. Go upstairs to the dresser, open the drawer and get the thimble [1]. Go outside to the flower garden and get some dew [1]. Go east then north to the oak tree. Pick up the acorns [1]. Dip the fly wings into the essence and fly into the hole [5]. Come back out and return to human form. Reach into the hole, revealing a ladder [3]. Climb the ladder to the house [2]. Look inside: if he's not sleeping, go back down the ladder and return, until he is sleeping. Go inside the house. Get the purse [4]. Look at the map and teleport away to the same map location (the oak). Go west to the desert and immediately face back east. When Medusa appears and gets close, hold the mirror to turn her to stone [5]. Get the cactus by the rock [1]. Go south two scenes and get the snake skin [1]. Teleport to the stream where you got the mud. If you don't yet have the eagle feather, wait around here until you get it. Go north to the spider cave. Dip the eagle feather into the essence and fly into the web, disposing of the spider [4]. Go into the cave, listen to the oracle, and receive an amber stone [1]. Teleport to the town and go into the store. Buy a pouch [1], salt [1], fish oil [1], and lard [1]. Pet the dog to get some hair [1]. Teleport back to the bottom of the path and walk back up to the house [2]. Go up to your room and put everything under the bed [4]. Get the mutton and go wait in the kitchen until Manannan returns (after 30:00) and asks for food. Go to the dining room and feed him the mutton. Then go upstairs and loiter outside your room until Manannan announces that he's going to sleep. ------------ Spellcasting ------------ Go to your room and get everything under the bed. Go to the study, get the wand from the cabinet, move the books, pull the lever, and go down to the workshop. Go to the book. Turn to page II (two) and make the "Understanding Creatures" spell [10]. Turn to page VII and make "Teleportation at Random" [10]. Turn to page XIV and make "Deep Sleep" [10]. Turn to page XXV and make "Transforming into a Cat" [10] (shape the dough). Turn to page LXXXIV and make "Brewing a Storm" [10]. Turn to page CLXIX and make "Becoming Invisible" [10]. Go up to the study, pull the lever, move the books, and return the wand. Go up to your room and put everything under the bed, then get the porridge and the cookie. Put the cookie into the porridge. Go into the kitchen and wait for Manannan to awaken, after 1:00:00. ------------------ Voyage to Daventry ------------------ Manannan will ask for breakfast. Go into the kitchen and feed him the poisoned porridge, turning him into a cat [12]. Go upstairs and get everything from under the bed. Go to the chicken coop and listen to the chickens. Teleport to forest just north of the oak and listen to the blue birds talk (leave and return until they are there, and to hear new things). You learn that you are really Prince Alexander of Daventry, and that you were kidnapped as a child. Teleport to the town. Go into the tavern and talk to the men. Give the captain your gold [3]. Go to the ship by the pier and go on board [2]. You get thrown into the hold. Go fore and get the small crate. Return aft and put the crate next to the large crate in the foreground. Jump onto the small crate, then onto the large crate, then onto the ladder. Climb the ladder to the next deck [2]. If the captain is in his quarters, go fore and return until he is gone. While you're in the forward compartment, get the shovel [1]. In the captain's quarters, go to the chest at the foot of his bed. Open it and retrieve all your stuff, and close the trunk. Return down into the hold. Go to the forward hold and listen to the mice. They will tell you that the treasure is buried five paces east of a lone palm. Wait around, listening to the mice, until you hear that land has been sighted, and again until you hear the command to drop the anchor. Go into the aft hold, put the sleeping powder on the deck, and recite "slumber henceforth". Climb up to the top deck and go to the middle of the ship. Walk off the ship into the sea and swim to shore [5]. Go to the north end of the beach, then east to the next scene. There will be a pirate there, so hurry north. Then return south and the pirate is gone. Go five paces east of the palm and dig, finding the treasure chest [7]. Go north and follow the path until you come to a stream. Dip the eagle feather into the essence and fly up (north) and two scenes west, to the edge of the cliff. The abominable snowman will appear, but will leave in confusion when he sees you transform. Go south (down) via the small trail to the south-west [4]. Climb down to the upper left landing; go into the cave and head east and you come out the upper right cave; climb down to the lower middle landing; go in the cave and head west to the lower left cave; climb to the middle landing; go in the cave and go east to the lower right cave; then follow the path west. Follow the path until you fall over a small bluff. --------------- Saving Daventry --------------- You land at the bottom of a stairway into a mountain. Go west and north and talk to the gnome. Return to the stairway and go in. Go up the stairs until you come out a cave above the clouds. Rub the invisibility ointment on your body. Go west, where you find the dragon and the princess. Go to the princess. Stir the storm brew with your finger and recite "brew of storms churn it up". The lightning kills the dragon [7]. When you become visible, untie Princess Rosella [3]. Take her down the stairs, past the gnome's house, and into the castle [4]. Have a happy reunion.
