====================================== King's Quest IV: The Perils of Rosella ====================================== Solution by David Tanguay (dat@thinkage.on.ca) ------- General ------- This solution simply explains how to solve the game. It is not a natural walkthrough since it assumes foreknowledge, but it more clearly illustrates the actions required to achieve various goals. There are maps at the end. Points for each action are given in square brackets. Items may be picked up whenever it's possible to do so, but this solution will follow need. There are several places where something or someone appears with only a random chance. If it's not there when you need it, just leave the scene and return until it is. Also, some characters may appear in several different locations. This solution will just say to go to the character; see the map for possible locations. You can leave and return to any until the character appears. There are several dangerous places, where random events can kill you with no chance to avoid them, or where a little mis-step can send you down a stairwell. I'll warn you to avoid some danger, or to be careful. This means you should save the game frequently at these spots, until you get past the danger. --------------- Getting Started --------------- Go to the mountain path where Lolotte's goons will capture you and bring you to her castle. ------------- Unicorn Quest ------------- Lolotte first requests that you bring her the unicorn in the forest. Go to the forest by the mine. You should see a bird tugging at a worm; if not, leave and return until you do. Quickly go to the worm and get it [2]. Go to the tree house, and go inside. The place is dirty, so clean it [5]. The dwarves come and have dinner with you, and leave behind a pouch of diamonds. Get the pouch [2] and go to the mine. Enter the mine and go to the back, to the lead dwarf. Give the pouch to him. He is so impressed with your honesty that he lets you keep them and gives you a lantern, too [3]. Go to the pier and try to talk to the fisherman. Follow him back into his shanty. Talk to him and his wife. Give him the diamonds, and he gives you his pole in return [3]. Go back to the end of the pier. Put the worm on the hook [1] and fish until you catch a fish [3]. Swim west from the pier until you come to Genesta's island, avoiding the shark and the whale. Look around the beaches until you find the peacock feather [2]. Swim back east (and back to the island, etc.), avoiding the shark, until you get swallowed by a whale. Get the bottle, open it, and read the note. Carefully climb up the left side of the tongue, angling from the left side towards the centre. Tickle the uvula with the feather [5] and get sneezed out into the ocean. Swim to the desert island nearby. Go to the pelican, but not too near, and give it the fish [4]: it spits up a whistle -- get it [2]. Look at the boats, go inside the bow on the east side of the island and look *in* the boat: you find a golden bridle [3]. Blow the whistle [2] and a dolphin comes to the island. Swim out to it and ride it back to Tamir [2]. Go to the pool, until cupid shows up. Go to the east side as he is scared off. Get the bow and arrows [2]. Go to the unicorn and shoot it with the bow [4]: the unicorn now loves you and won't run off. Put the bridle on the unicorn [3] and ride it back to the castle. Lolotte will take the unicorn [7]. ----------------------- Getting the Magic Fruit ----------------------- Lolotte wants the magic hen, but we'll first take a side trip to get Graham's medicine. Go to the mansion, inside to the living room. Look at the shelf and get the book of Shakespeare [2]. Go to the minstrel, talk to him, and give him the book. He reads it and gives up music for the stage, giving you his lute [3]. Go to Pan and play the lute. He admires this new instrument. Give it to him and he gives you his flute [3]. Go to the bridge and look underneath: there is a gold ball [2]. Go to the lily pond and give the ball to the frog. The frog returns it to the side of the pond. Go get the frog and kiss it [3]. It turns into an obnoxious prince who gives you the tiny frog crown [2]. May as well retrieve the ball. Go to the waterfalls, to the edge of the pool. Wear the crown [5] which turns you into a frog. You swim through the falls to a hollow on the other side, and return to human form. Get the board there [2]. Turn on the lantern and go into the cave. Get a bone [2] from the pile by the door. Avoid the troll and carefully follow the map below through the caves to the chasm (there's little indication -- you'll find it by falling). Put the board across the chasm [2], cross over and go out the hole you can see. Jump to the grass clumps, repeating until you are close to the island in the swamp. Put the board across the water [2] and carefully cross to the island. Play the flute to mesmerise the cobra [4], quickly grab the fruit [10], and retreat. Get the board and jump back to the cave. Again, ware the chasm, put the board across the chasm [2], and avoid the troll as you go back to the falls. Swim into the falls and you will come out the other side. --------- Hen Quest --------- Go to the stone house, avoiding the ogre and his wife. Open the door and quickly give the bone to the dog [4]. Go upstairs and get the axe [2]. Return downstairs and go into the closet by the dog. Wait until you hear the ogre return, then look through the keyhole. You see him have supper, get a golden egg from his magic hen, then fall asleep. Open the door, go to the table and get the hen [4]. Quickly go to the door, out, and away. Go to the castle, and Lolotte will take the hen [7]. ------------------- Pandora's Box Quest ------------------- Lolotte now wants Pandora's box. Go to the moving trees. Chop a tree with the axe [4] (actually, you just wield it menacingly): the trees will now leave you alone. Go through the trees and into the skull shaped cave. Avoid the witch that comes after you and go between the two others. Get the eye they pass between each other [3]. Leave the cave and return. They throw out a scarab, protection from the dead. Get it [2] and give them the eye [3], but stay away from their clutches. Go to the mansion and inside to the living room. Look at the painting. Go to the west wall and look at it, discovering a latch. Pull the latch to reveal a secret door [4]. Go through and get the shovel [2]. Return back to the main entrance and go upstairs to the nursery. There's no baby there, just a ghost. Go out to the west cemetery and find the grave of the baby Hiram Bennet. Dig and you find a rattle [3]. Return to the nursery and put the rattle in the cradle [2] silencing the baby. Now there's moaning downstairs. Go down and see the miserly ghost. Go out to the west cemetery and look for the grave of Newberry Will, a miser. Dig and discover a bag of gold coins [3]. Return to the mansion and give the gold to the miser [2]. Now there's crying upstairs in the east bedroom. It's a heartbroken young woman. Go to the east cemetery and look for the grave of Betty Cowden, who lost her lover at sea. Dig and find a locket [3]. Return to the bedroom and give Betty the locket [2]. Now there's another moaning from downstairs. It's the lord of the manor looking for something. Go to the west cemetry and find the grave of Lord Coningsby. Dig and find a medal of honour [3]. Return to the mansion and give it to him [2]. Now a ghost of a little boy appears, and runs off. Follow him up to the attic. He's on a chest, and won't move until you give him a toy. Go out to the east cemetery and look for the grave of Willy. Dig and find a toy horse [3]. Return to the mansion and follow Willy back up to the attic. Give him the toy [2] and he disappears. Open the chest and look inside, finding sheet music [2]. Go through the living room and the secret door and up the stairs to the turret. Go to the organ and sit on the bench. Play the sheet music [4]. Look in the drawer and get the key [2]. Go out to the east cemetery to the crypt door. Unlock the door with the skeleton key [3], open it, and go inside. Get the rope: it's a ladder [2]. Go down and get Pandora's Box [4]. Don't open it! Return to the castle, where Lolotte takes the box [7]. ----------------- Defeating Lolotte ----------------- Lolotte plans to marry you to her son, Edgar, in the morning. She locks you in Edgar's room for the night. Fortunately, Edgar is a nice boy. He comes up to the door and slips a rose underneath. Get the rose, look at it, and get the attached key [2]. Unlock the door [2] and carefully go down the stairs to the dining hall. Quickly go past the guard into the back kitchen. Open the east cabinet and get all your stuff [4]. Leave the kitchen, going quickly past the guard then east to the throne room. Don't step on the rug as you go through to the east turret. Carefully go up the stairs, all the way to Lolotte's bedroom. Unlock the door with the gold key [2] and go inside. Shoot Lolotte with Cupid's bow: love does not agree with her constitution and she dies [8]. Edgar frees you of obligation, and gives you free access to the castle. Get the talisman [5]. ------ Finale ------ Carefully go down the stairs to the next level. Go to the first door (east end of the hall) and into the storage room. Get the hen [2] and Pandora's Box [2]. Leave the castle and go to the stables. Open the gate to free the unicorn [4]. Leave the castle grounds and return to inside the crypt. Drop Pandora's Box where you found it [2]. Close and lock the crypt door [2] so nobody will open the box. Go to the pier and swim to Genesta's island again, avoiding the shark. Go up to her room and give her the talisman. She is restored [10]. She is glad that you also found her magic hen [2]. Genesta restores your princess dress. She also gives Edgar a beautiful new body. He wants to marry you, but you have to get back home. Genesta sends you back. You give the fruit to Graham, restoring him.
