====================== The Legend of Kyrandia ====================== Solution by David Tanguay (dat@thinkage.on.ca) CD OEM version 3.70 ------- General ------- There are six major areas to the Kyrandia map: I'll call them the Home Forest, the Timbermist Woods, the Shadowlands (a labyrinth), the Enchanted Forest, Zanthia's Backyard, and the Castle Kyrandia. When you first enter into one of these areas, I'll just assume that you first map the whole area out and make yourself familiar with the local landmarks, without picking anything up or trying anything. During exploration, you should pick up anything you can, with an exception or two. You'll only need one at a time of any multiply occuring objects. Your inventory will fill up, so you'll have to drop things. I'll assume everything you've come across so far is in your inventory: you may have to run back to where you dropped it. There are some problems for which I could see no deductive solution: trial and error seemed to be the only way to solve it. I'll say so, and just give you the useful results. For the most part, I've tried to keep this walkthrough close to the story, rather than optimising it to reduce travel and actions. ----------- Home Forest ----------- Pick up everything in the room: the garnet, the note, the saw under the table, and the apple from the big vase. Read the note: it's addressed to Brynn. If you click on the window, You call for Brynn, so the temple must be to the west. Try to leave, listen to the tree, then leave again. Things to notice while exploring: - the dent in the rotting tree - the missing orb on the forest altar Go into the Temple of Kyrandia. Give the note to Brynn. Notice that the spells (plural!) are keyed by a lavender rose, and that you can expect help from Darm and Zanthia. You must find a lavender rose and bring it to Brinn. Go to the forest altar and pick a rose. While you're in the area, give your saw to Herman so he can fix the bridge. On your way back to the temple, catch a tear at the Pool of Sorrow. It's the same shape as the dent in the rotting tree. Put the tear into the tree, curing it. Let Merith run off for now, and continue on to the temple. Give Brynn the rose. She turns it into a silver rose. You must now lay it on the silver altar. Head to the forest altar. Just west of it you'll catch up to Merith. Pick up the purple marble and go to the altar. Put the marble in its place on the altar, then put the silver rose on the altar. You now have an amulet, but all the gems are black. Go to the bridge. Herman has fixed it now, and you can cross over into ... ---------------- Timbermist Woods ---------------- Things to notice while exploring: - the danger sign next to the ruby tree - the hole in Deadwood Glade - the pretty rock in the stream at the spring - the marble altar with a bowl (Don't go into the cave at Serpent's Grotto just yet.) Go to Darm's hut and talk to him and Brandywine. You have to get Darm a quill. Talk to Nolby. He laments the misfortune of the last remaining songbird, and advises you that you must sow before you can harvest. So start sowing: put an acorn, the walnut, and the pinecone into the hole in Deadwood Glade. The Pseudobushiahugiflora makes one of your amulet gems turn yellow. Click it, and it appears to be a healing spell. (Don't worry, it'll come back after a few turns.) Go to the injured songbird and use the yellow amulet spell. Pick up the feather. Give it to Darm, and he'll write you a scroll. You must now find your birthstones, and put them on a plate in the correct order. The first stone represents summer, and is hidden nearby, and the others are just lying about. You can try out the scroll at any time: it's a re-useable scroll of cold. The plate must be that gold thing on the marble altar. There are plenty of gems lying about, but the first one you need is hidden, so try for that pretty rock in stream at the spring: click on the stream an you get a sunstone. You'll also need a ruby. Grab one from the ruby tree, and keep grabbing until you get one. Use the yellow amulet spell to heal yourself. Get all the gems to the altar area, and save the game: this is the first bout of trial and error, and it is different from game to game. Put the sunstone on the plate first, and the jewel on the front of the altar will fill in. The order of the rest is random: try the gems until you discover the second, then the others, restoring and restarting as necessary. The sequence will remain the same across the saves and restores. Alternatively, you can run all over the two forests and re-collect the gems -- they're not destroyed, just teleported. Once you've set down the correct sequence, the plate turns into a flute. Return to Darm. Brandywine will tell you to seek Zanthia across the Shadowlands. The entrance is at Serpent's Grotto. When you enter, you'll meet Malcolm. Throw the knife back at him. Play the flute to shatter the ice. Enter... --------------- The Shadowlands --------------- You'll come to a crossing, and your way back will be barred by a portcullis. You'll need something heavy to put into the basket to reraise it. To explore the labyrinth, you must use the fireberries from the bushes. They will last for three cave moves in your inventory, but will burn forever if you drop them on the ground. I.e., pick up three berries from a bush, move to the next cave, drop a berry, move on, etc. In this way you can light up and explore the whole labyrinth. There are parts of the labyrinth where you'll have explored as far as possible from all bushes, and there will still be unexplored openings. Save the game and try one of them: one will lead to another bush or a lit cave. Special rooms to notice: - the Pantheon of Moonlight - the Cavern of Twilight - the volcanic river - the cave of emeralds - the Chasm of Everfall There are four otherwise ordinary caves that contain heavy rocks. There's also a rock in the Cavern of Twilight. Put all the rocks into the basket at the crossing (one will miss): this re-opens the portcullis. To cross the volcanic river, use the scroll of cold. Cross over and get the iron key on the other side. Talk to the floating purple Will'o'Wisps in the Pantheon of Moonlight. If you complete the altar, they'll teach you how to float, which would allow you to cross the Chasm of Everfall. Get the gold coin from the Cavern of Twilight, and drop it into the ancient well in the Timbermist Woods. Pick up the moonstone and put it into the hole in the altar at the Pantheon of Moonlight. One of your amulet gems turns purple. Click it, and you become a purple Will'o'Wisp ball. You can now cross the Chasm into... ---------------- Enchanted Forest ---------------- Head east, get clobbered, and awaken in Zanthia's dwelling. You must get a flask of water from the Enchanted Fountain. Go to the fountain, and meet Malcolm again. You must recover the crystal ball to restore the fountain. Things to notice while exploring: - the eyes in the swamp: touch and die - the little door Go to the burning branch. Use the scroll of cold, and take the crystal ball. Return to the fountain and replace the ball. Fill the flask with water, then drink it: one of your amulet gems turns blue. Refill the flask and give it to Zanthia. Now she wants blueberries. Get the blueberries. When you return, Zanthia is gone, but notice the rug. Move the rug to reveal a door. Through the door is... ------------------ Zanthia's Backyard ------------------ Things to notice while exploring: - there's a rainbowstone in the old stump - the indentations in the Crystals of Alchemy look like flasks - the golden flying horses at the lagoon Zanthia isn't here, so you'll have to go back to her hut and try to mix the potions yourself. This is all trial and error, except that you know that blueberries is an ingredient, and from there you'll see a pattern. If you run out of flasks, just step out and back and another flask will appear. blueberries and (sapphire or aquamarine or opal) makes a blue potion tulip and (emerald or topaz) makes a yellow potion orchid and (garnet or ruby) makes a red potion Now go to the Crystals of Alchemy. Put a red potion in one indentation, a yellow potion in the other, and you will create an orange potion. Similarly, red and blue make purple, and yellow and blue makes green. Save the game before you try the potions, so you don't have to make a new batch. The green potion is deadly poison. The purple potion shrinks you. The orange potion tastes like alfalfa, but doesn't seem to do anything. Go to the floating chalice in the Enchanted Forest. Use your blue amulet spell. Follow the faun to the little door. Drink the purple potion, and you enter into the faun's abode. He wants something good for the chalice: an apple. Go back out and pick up the chalice. Here's another less obvious trial and error. Remember that Kallak's message said that the lavender rose will key spells. You've only used it once, so now's a good time to make sure you have one in your inventory. You should also have the iron key and the chalice. Go to the lagoon, since it seems to be the only interesting place left. Horses and an alfalfa-tasting potion? As in horse-chow. Step onto the hexagram and quaff the orange potion. You turn into a flying horse and fly off to the island in the background. --------------- Castle Kyrandia --------------- You would like to honour your parents by putting something on their grave. Put the lavender rose on it. Katherine's ghost appears. The final amulet gem turns red: it's a spell of invisibility. Go to the gate. If you simply try the key, the dragons on the gate will come to life and toast you. Use the red invisibility spell, then use the iron key and the gate lock. Enter the castle. Malcolm greets you, and you are told that Herman desperately wants to return your saw. Beware of Herman. When you run into him, use the healing spell. Things to notice while exploring: - the locked double doors at the north end of the great hall - sceptre in the kitchen (hard to see, on the right) Back in the study, notice that you can pull out and return the books, and that each book has an associated letter. Pull out the books representing the letters "OPEN": the fireplace spins around and reveals the crown. Walk through the fireplace. You will come to a green magic force-field. Use your blue amulet spell to remove it. Go north and west, and notice the odd tile on the floor (upper-right). Move the tile and pick up the key. Go to the room with Zanthia. Ring the bells. By trial and error, the sequence DO FA MI RE will open a hidden vault. Pick up the gold key. Go to the great hall, downstairs, and use both keys on the double doors. They open, revealing the Royal Alcove. Put the crown, representing the king, on the centre pillow. Put the sceptre, held in the king's right hand, on the left pillow (as he's facing you). Put the chalice, representing the queen, on the right pillow. The vault opens. Malcolm appears, you slug him, and you enter the vault. Here's the Kyragem. Malcolm recovers, and will blast you with a enstoning spell if you're not quick. Notice the mirror on the right on the room. Use the red amulet spell (invisibility) and step in front of the mirror: the spell will pass through you and bounce off the mirror, enstoning Malcolm. The kingdom is saved and magically restored. Long live King Brandon. ============================================================================== Maps ==== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Home Forest and Timbermist Woods -------------------------------- +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ |TK|-| | |HO| | |-| |-|FA|-| | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | |-|WI|-| |-| |-|PS|-| | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | +--+ | | +--+ | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ |RT| |DH|-| |-| |-|BR|-| | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | |-|MA|-| |-|SN| +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | |-| |-|OT|-|AW|-|SP| +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | |-| |-| |-| | | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ |DG|-| |-|SG|-| |-| |-> Shadowlands +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ Legend: TK Temple of Kyrandia MA Marble Altar HO Home SN Songbird's Nest FA Forest Altar OT Old Tree WI Willow (Rotting Tree) AW Ancient Well PS Pool of Sorrow SP Spring RT Ruby Tree DG Deadwood Glade DH Darm's Hut SG Serpent's Grotto BR Bridge ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Shadowlands ----------- +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | |->EF | |-|f |-| |-| |-| |-| | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | | | | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ |CE| | |-| |-| |-| |-|PM|-|f |-| |-| |-| | | r| +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | | | | | | | | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | |-| | | |-|f |-| |-| | | r|-| |-|f |-| |-| |-|f |-| | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | | | | | | | | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ TW<-|TC|-|f | | |-| r|-| |-| | | |-| | | r|-| |-| |-|EM| | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | | | | | | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ |f |-| | | | | |-|f | | | |f |-| | | |-| | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | | | | | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | |-| |-|f |-| |-| | | |-| |-| |-|f |-| | |f | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | | | | | | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | |-| |-| |-| |-|CT|-|f |-| |-| | | |-|VR| +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | +--+ +--+ +--+ | |-| |-| | +--+ +--+ +--+ Legend: CE Chasm of Everfall PM Pantheon of Moonlight TC Treacherous Crossing EM Cave of Emeralds CT Cavern of Twilight VR Volcanic River TW exit to Timbermist Woods f cave has fireberry bush EF exit to Enchanted Forest r cave has a large rock ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Enchanted Forest and Zanthia's Backyard --------------------------------------- +--+ |TL| +--+ | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ Shadowlands<-| |-| |-| |-| | | |-| |-| |-| |-| | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | | | | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ |CW|-| | | | | |-| |-|EF|-| |-| |-|ZD| | |-| | | |-| | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | | | \ | | | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | |-| |-| |-| | | |-| |-| |-| | |SS|-| |-| |-| |-| | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | | | \ | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | |-| | | | | | |TD| | | | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | |-| |-| |-| |-| | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | |CA| | |-| |-| | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | | | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | |-| |-| |-| |-| | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ Legend: CW Cascading Waterfall TL Tropical Lagoon EF Enchanted Fountain SS Strange Stump ZD Zanthia's Dwelling CA Crystals of Alchemy TD Tiny Dwelling ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Castle Kyrandia --------------- +--+ +--+ +--+ | |-| |-| | +--+ +--+ +--+ | +--+ +--+ +--+ | |-|FF| | | +--+ +--+ +--+ | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | |-| |-| |-| | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | |-| |-| | | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | |-| |-| | |RA|-| | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ |ST|-| |-| |-|KI| | |-| |-| |-| |-| | +--+ | | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | | +--+ +--+ | |GH| | |GH| +--+ | | +--+ +--+ +--+ | | +--+ +--+ | |-| |-| | |RZ|-| |-| |-| |-| | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | up | | | +--+ +^-+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ | |-| |-| | | |-| |-| | +--+ +--+ +--+ +--+ +v-+ +--+ | down +--+ \ +--+ | | --|GA| +--+ +--+ | | +--+ +--+ +--+ / | |-|MG|-| |- +--+ +--+ +--+ | +--+ | | +--+ Legend: MG Misty Grave ST Study GA Gate FF Force Field RA Royal Alcove GH Great Hall KI Kitchen RZ Room with Zanthia
