Mesopotamia ©James Gordon 2003
from “Endomusia” on Borealis Records
They say we owe
all that we know
to the sons and to the daughters
Of those who were born
along the ancient shores
of the Euphrates' graceful waters.
The sail and the wheel,
The first farmer's fields.
Poetry and song were first heard here.
From that river's irrigation,
The cradle of civilization.
But tonight it is a river of tears
Rock-a-bye
The wind blows cold tonight
The bough is broken and the cradle falls
And a part of us all
Is lost in that fiery ball
In Mesopotamia....
It was there that mankind
First saw the signs
That they could use their brains not just their brawn
But if you look at the state
Of the world they helped create,
You'd wonder if those days are now gone.
Where the knowledge we found,
Was first written down,
But for all that what have we really learned?
We're erasing those pages,
Returning them to the dark ages
Tonight Mesopotamia burns
Repeat Chorus twice
