Informed
Choices
The midwifery model
of care is unique in health care. Its philosophy emphasizes informed choice,
choice of birthplace, and continuity of care.
Midwives promote
informed choice in decision making. This philosophy relies on a full exchange
of information in a relaxed, non-authoritarian, co-operative manner. We
encourage women to actively participate in their care. We encourage decision
making as a shared responsibility, but recognize the woman as the primary
decision-maker.
Pregnancy and birth
involve many decisions, some of which can be very difficult to make. Your
midwives provide information to help you make informed decisions about
birthplace, prenatal testing, technology and baby care. We guide and support
you in your decisions, but we will not make them for you.
Women are supported in their choice of birthplace
- home or hospital - and we will help explain the risks and benefits of
each so that you are well equipped to make this important decision. Midwives
allow for flexibility in choice of birthplace. There is no rush to decide,
and your decision may be re-opened for discussion should your feelings
change.
Midwives provide
continuity of care during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. You will come
to know us throughout your care.
Registered Midwives
are governed by the College of Midwives of Ontario. We are certified in
Adult CPR and Neonatal Resuscitation, and we have privileges at Guelph
General Hospital and Groves Memorial Community Hospital. Our practice
standards and protocols are in accordance with all formal requirements.
We would be pleased to refer you to clients we have worked with if you
would like references.
