INTER-COUNTY 4-H DAIRY JUDGING COMPETITION

This judging competition, held yearly in early August, was designed in 1989 to train 4-H’ers in the correct conformation of dairy animals, help in their decision making process and develop confidence while defending their decisions. Each county is allowed to send a team of two 4-H members to this event, which rotates across the province each year. Counties that have more than 50 4-H dairy members are permitted to send an additional team. From this competition, four people are selected to represent Ontario at the National 4-H Dairy Judging Competition in Madison, Wisconsin, during the World Dairy Expo.

The addition of a Junior Division has proved to be a positive step as 24 junior teams and 24 senior teams of dairy calf club members participated in this twelth annual competition at the Embro Fairgrounds on August 15th. This annual event trains 4-H members in the correct conformation of dairy animals and allows them to develop presentation, and organization skills in giving reasons as well as learning to justify their placings. From this years competition, Andy Cavanagh (Carlton), Scott Buckley (Victoria), Heather Forbes ( Lambton) and Christina Webb (Northumberland) have been selected as the judging team to represent Ontario at the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Competition held in Madison, Wisconsin, at the time of the World Dairy Expo. Bert Stewart of Halton County will accompany and coach the team. All team members will be provided with team jackets, generously donated by the Ontairo Holstein Branch.

Both the juniors and the seniors judged nine classes of cattle and wrote a quiz based on the "You be the Judge" Manual, with the juniors giving reasons on three classes and the seniors on six classes. Regional Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Milking Shorthorn, Holstein and Jersey breeders are sincerely thanked for supplying the cattle.

All in all, the day was a wonderful success. 4-Her's from around Ontario not only had the opportunity to learn more about judging dairy cattle but were also able to make friends and compete with fellow 4-H members.

A huge thank you goes to the organizing committee who did an excellent job of planning and hosting this event. We also thank those who donated the awards, feed and supplies, and all the volunteers who helped keep this competition running smoothly. We wish all of our trip winners well in their upcoming competition.

The Inter-County 4-H Dairy Judging Competition is funded in part by the Ontario Dairy Youth Trust Fund.
