Some of the Facts
- There are 5,000 registered Holstein Breeders in Ontario.
- 92,769 animals were registered by Ontario Holstein breeders, in 1997.
- In 1993, over $92 million in Holstein genetics were exported from Canada through the sale of live cattle, embryos and semen. 70% of theses sales were from Ontario.
- The United States purchased 89% of the total dairy cattle exports from Ontario for about $24.5 million while the second and third largest importers were Mexico and Japan.
- The embryo shop at Eastern Breeders Inc. reports a total of 400 embryos were shipped internationally in 1996. 42% of these were exported to Argentina.
- Ontario Holsteins have allowed the province to win the State Herd Competition at the World Dairy Expo, in Madison, Wisconsin, an unprecedented 17 times in the last 18 years. 8 Ontario Holsteins won their individual classes at the 1996 World Dairy Expo.
