What's New ?

September 03, 1998 :

Barrie Malloch has been hard at work helping out the soon to be Ex-Web Master. She has completed the results from the Ontario Championship 3 K and the Ontario Championship 1 K from Georgian Bay.

And the soon to Ex-Statistican has finished processing the results from the last meets this season : USLC Fort Lauderdale and Casablanca and Dalewood and Quebec Championship Montreal and Canadian Championship Edmonton.

The 1997/98 Top Ten and an updated records listing will be ready for distribution at the next Board of Directors Meeting on September 20. If you want to attend the meeting just check with Bruce, the MSO Registrar for all the details.

August 22, 1998 :

Time is running out to find a new Web Master ... contact the Board of Directors or the Registrar if you are interested in giving back something to our sport

In the meantime the Statsman has provided results from a bunch of meets : Hull, Syracuse, Technosport, Indianapolis, Technosport, Technosport, Downtown Swim Club, Cleveland and Masters Games as well as updated records.

July 26, 1998 :

Not much going on this summer, but here are the minutes from the May 31 Board of Directors meeting. The results from the World Championship in Casablanca are available via USMS. And from over 'ome there is a new link to British Results; the British Top Ten has been revamped while the British and UK Meet Schedules have been updated. Open Water Swimming in Ontario hits its peak in August with 3 swims on consecutive weekends. The fellow in Hong Kong looks at the lighter side of Masters Swimming. If you are interested in Haui, New Zealand, Mandurah, Australia or St John's, Newfoundland check out the links to the club web sites.

As you might note in the minutes from May 31, there are a few projects to finish off and then the current Web Master is resigning. Barrie Malloch has started to fill in and is working on the Administration History. If any of you Web Heads (thanks Roy) are interested in helping out contact the Board or the registrar. Maybe you could take over a small section such as the club listing or the links or the meet schedule or ...

June 27, 1998 :

I finally found my copy of the Balance Sheet and yes, Virginia, there is money in the bank.

The web version of the Administration History has finally been started. Patti McVetty spent hours and hours reading the minutes of the Directors meetings to compile this document. Hopefully you will take note of those swimmers who have been instrumental in the growth of our organization. And maybe it will inspire you to volunteer !

The Education section of our web site has been re-organized a little. The Fitness section will deal with nutrition, psychology, physiology and health. Information about stroke improvement, technique, starts and turns will be found in the Training section. And the Workouts have been separated into their own section

For those of you keeping score ... the number of links suggested by the 2100+ Masters Swimmers in this province is exactly zero ???

June 20, 1998 :

Just a quicky this week ... the Income Statement shows that we are in good shape financially. Make sure you bookmark the Nepean Web Site - the home for all the latest information about the 1999 Canadian Masters Swimming Championship. Another site of interest to many Masters Swimmers is Solo Swims of Ontario And, as you may have noticed on the home page, it is the 20th Anniversary of the First 'World' Masters Championship, held in Alderwood.

June 13, 1998 :

The Dalewood web site has been around for a while, but we now have a link to it. Speaking of links, they have been rearranged and a few new ones added. Links to Quebec and/or British Columbia have been added for meet schedules, records, top ten, results and places to swim. And the club list of places to swim has been updated. Or you could find out what's going on in the minutes of the last Board of Directors meeting.

May 24, 1998 :

Let's start off this week with a quote from the New England Masters Swim Club newsletter : "Anyone who asks if you won or lost has no idea what winning is." (Thanks to Tom Lyndon.)

More results : Technosport March and Ancaster and Technosport April and Milton and Etobicoke Records Time Trial, as well as updated records. The North Toronto Masters Swim Club invites all Masters Swimmers to its outdoor long course workouts. And we now have a picture of Ted Roach and his SWIMS award.

May 16, 1998 :

You'll have to be content with the results from the Ontario Championship and a list of updated records this week 'cause that's all there is.

May 10, 1998 :

Results from Pop Sidwell (Manitoba) and Kenora and London and Nepean and Technosport and New England Championship, Rhode Island and Manitoba Championship, Winnipeg and Great Lakes Zone Championship, Chicago have now been posted. And we have now linked to the Technosport web site.

May 03, 1998 :

Thank you, Barrie Malloch, for a couple of pictures ... a great way to promote Open Water Swimming. A nice summer diversion from the chlorine clogged pools in the province. And, thank you, Monica Tory, for setting up the Swimmer Survey information. The survey data was originally compiled by Barrie as chair of the Membership Committee (way back in 1996). A very special thank you to Barrie and Monica for helping to improve OUR web site.

April 11, 1998 :

Sorry, I've been away so long. Visit the new Milton Masters Web Site. Re-read the editorial that all MSO members received in the mail last month. Peruse the minutes from the January and February Board of Directors meetings, as well as the Special General Meeting. Check out the results from Technosport January, Alderwood and Technosport February.

Now that I have upgraded to Netscape Navigator 4.0, I noticed a number of errors with the icons that link the pages in our web site. My old browser did not show these errors. I would ask all you web heads out there to let me know if you see a problem of any sort with our web site. We may as well aim for perfection.

March 12, 1998 :

Please take a moment to reflect upon the vision, the dedication and leadership needed to direct an organization such as ours. And then congratulate Kay Easun and Ted Roach and Beth Whittall as the first 3 recipients of the Masters Swimming Ontario SWIMS Award. The Board of Directors created this award to recognize Swimmers Who Impacted Masters Swimming. A presentation ceremony will be held at the Ontario Championship on Saturday, March 14, 1998

February 26, 1998 :

In preparation for the Ontario Championship the women's records and the men's records and the relay records have been completely updated. And a condensed list of records accepted is now available.

The results from Burlington : The World's First Personal Best Masters Swim Meet are now in. Of the 142 swimmers who swam at Burlington ... a total of 40 (!!!) swimmers swam in their first Masters meet ... and another 39 swimmers swam an individual event for the first time. Of the 607 swims at Burlington ... 146 swims were swum by first time swimmers ... 56 swims were swimmers completing a brand new event ... and another 109 swims were Personal Bests !

February 07, 1998 :

Congratulations MSC ---- the Masters Swimming Canada Web Site has been launched. Please take a moment to let Jackie Spry, MSC Secretary and Webmaster know you appreciate her efforts. Included in the MSC site is information on the MSC News. The editor, Beth Whittall, is always on the look out for new material.

All of the links and email addresses have been updated. Please spend some time surfing around the world and let me know if you find any great new sites.

January 31, 1998 :

The minutes from the AGM are now available, as are the minutes from the board meetings on December 06 and November 16.

The next Board of Directors meeting is at 10:15 am Saturday, February 21 in Nepean, followed by the Nepean Winterlude Swim Meet ... come out and be heard.

There are plenty of meets in February : Technosport / London / Rideau Speedeau / Nepean / Technosport / Dalewood and for something completely different, The World's First Personal Best Masters Swim Meet in Burlington.

No one has yet seen the meet information package for the 1998 Canadian Masters Swimming Championship ... but you could check out the web site.

January 18, 1998 :

All of the results from the fall meet schedule are now available ... just in time to be forwarded to the National Statistican for the calendar year end MSC Top Twenty.

January 13, 1998 :

Happy New Year !!! A few minor updates and a new club web site for the University of Guelph Piranhas. Stay tuned for news from the AGM. Scoring was not prohibited. The age determination date was not changed. The residency requirement was not elimintated. And, the statistician should have the results from the fall meets posted very soon.

December 24, 1997 :

Ho Ho Ho !!! Do you think if Santa was a Masters Swimmer he would be slimmer ? While you're sitting around during the holidays why not surf the web. We have new links to some sites in Australia. And if you find any other sites that are of interest please let me know. And the Olympic Gold Masters are now online. And the Rideau Speedeaus want you to know about the Swimmers in Heats swim meet. Happy Holidays.

December 07, 1997 :

The Annual General Meeting of MSO was held yesterday. After a year long process to define the Committee Structure and create the Strategic Plan, the Board of Directors is now in a position to lead this organization towards the millennium. There is one vacant position on the Board and numerous committee memberships to fill. How GREAT would this organization be if YOU (and the other 2133 swimmers in the province) donated just one hour of time ?

November 30, 1997 :

Do you remember the exhilaration of your first meet ??? Have you ever swum a great race only to finish out of the medals ??? Can you imagine the adrenalin rush of swimming a new event for the first time ??? The Burlington Masters invites you to a Masters Swim Meet to celebrate the satisfaction of personal accomplishment !!! The World’s First Personal Best Masters Swim Meet !!!

November 21, 1997 :

The opening paragraph of the MSO Handbook reads : "Canadian Masters Swimming began in Amarillo, Texas in 1971 when Hud Stewart and Al Waites from Ontario entered the second annual U.S. Short Course Championship along with 135 American swimmers. Hud then formed the first official Canadian Masters swim club, the U of T Masters.". It is with profound sadness that we learned that Hud passed away on September 29 of this year. I remember a train ride home from the Canadian Championship in Dollard in 1983 when Hud and I talked of swimming and life (although I know Hud was much more interested in talking to Peggy). I supplied Hud with some data on world records a few years ago and we corresponded briefly about how swimming times were improving faster than track and field times. The next time you hop into the pool, spare a thought for the father of our sport in this country.

Make sure you check out the updated places to swim and welcome to new clubs in Courtice and North Bay and Orleans. Wow, take a look at the eye-popping Downtown Swim Club web site. And the statistician goofed up the names on some of the relay records, but they have now been corrected.

November 09, 1997 :

In preparation for the MSO Annual General Meeting the agenda and the reports and the financials have been posted to the web site, as well as the minutes from last year, in case your memory needed refreshing. After figuring out what you can do to help the administration of your sport, you could check out the meet schedule. The minutes from the last two board meetings August 24 and October 05 are also available.

October 26, 1997 :

The statistician finally got around to updating the Records. Please note that the file names have been changed. Update your bookmarks as needed. And the results from Montreal and Maui are now available.

October 13, 1997 :

As this day draws to a close, let us give thanks to the many volunteers who keep our sport alive, for without our active lifestyle we would be merely lumps of turkey on the couch. Have a look at the brand new and improved super duper Ontario Top Ten. The Ontario ranking is published each year for the swimming season ended September 30. The ranking will be in the mail to all registered clubs as soon as the photocopier is finished. The Canadian Top Twenty is officially published for the calendar year, but there seems to be an interim top ten version available now, to coincide with our traditional swimming season.

September 22, 1997 :

The Meet Schedule has been updated, although there will undoubtedly be more meets announced at the next MSO Board Meeting, October 05. Why not show up and see what's going on ? We also welcome the Rideau Speedeaus as our newest club web site. And if your tax haven of choice is Guernsey, be sure to join in a local workout or an ocean swim.
