Postcards from Devon and Somerset U.K., Countryside and National Trust Properties.

You are the visitor to this site since 30th October 1999.

These cards are from the south of England, where I was born. When I visit the U.K. I usually make a pilgrimage to Devon and Somerset. It does rain a lot, but is not usually severely cold or extremely hot .. unlike Canada where I now live. I prefer to stay in Bournemouth or Weymouth, in the County of Dorset, on the south coast. My favourite small hotel in Bournemouth was called the Redroofs. I wonder if it is still there.

The counties of Devon and Somerset have beautiful beaches, so the traffic is horrendous in most popular months of summer. There are many farmhouses which do B&B (bed and breakfast) and country tours. The Exmoor and Dartmoor bleak moors and bogs, made famous by Sherlock Holmes (Hound of the Baskervilles) are here. In the summers when I visited, it usually rained and the moors were mysterious places shrouded in mist.

DEVON: The Doone Valley, Malmsmead. This valley, deep on Exmoor, runs from Somerset into Devon. Close by, Oare Water joins Badgworthy Water to flow into Devon under the ancient stone bridge. All the names made famous in the story of Lorna Doone. DEVON: Watersmeet, Lynmouth, is a beautiful spot now in the care of the National Trust. Combe Water and East Lyn come through wooded gorges to join at this point. Unfortunately about 40 years ago this entire valley was heavily flooded. A great wall of water suddenly entered the Lyn Valley during the early hours and took everything in its' path. It was the scene of the Lymouth Disaster. (Very much like a similar disaster in a Quebec valley in 1997).

All these villages and the countryside around are famous for their pleasant walking paths and horseback riding facilities. Comfortable pubs may be found for a place to lunch on the "Plowman's Lunch" of fresh rolls and cheese, chicken in a basket, fish and chips etc. Just take your rainwear and "welly boots".
