Here are some tips to help with your choice of paint:
You cannot put latex on oil.
You can put oil on latex.
To change from oil to latex, you must use an oil based primer. (Be prepared for the odour! Choose days when you can leave the windows open and leave buckets of vinegar and water around to help absorb the odour).
To test if the previous paint was oil or latex: use nail varnish remover (acetone), in a place where it will not show too much. This will remove some latex, but will not touch oil.
Flat latex will absorb finger marks etc. Use semi-gloss on woodwork.
Lightest colours will open up an area and reflect the light best. Then your coloured furnishings and accessories will tone down and give weight to the area.
