Awards and Nominations
The Porcupine's Quill is honoured that a number of our books have received
nominations and awards over the years. Here is a brief list of titles that
have been so recognized.
Awards
Congratulations to PQL author Mike Barnes! His new collection of short stories,
Aquarium,
has won the Third Annual Danuta Gleed Literary Award. This award recognizes
the best first English-language collection of short fiction by a Canadian
author in 1999.
The 1996 Chapters/Books
in Canada First Novel Prize was awarded to Keath Fraser's PQL
novel, Popular Anatomy.
Don Coles'
Forests of the Medieval World won the
1993 Governor General's Award (Poetry category).
Caroline
Adderson's
Bad Imaginings won the
Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize (BC Book Prize, 1994).
Don Dickinson's
Blue
Husbands won the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize (BC Book Prize, 1992).
A Night
at the Opera by Ray Smith won the 1992 Q-Spell Award for the
best English-language fiction written by a Quebec author. A Night at the Opera
is currently out-of-print.
Children/Youth Book Awards
Rebellion
(Marianne Brandis): 1996 Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction
Sign
of the Scales (Marianne Brandis): 1991 Geoffrey Bilson Award
for Historical Fiction
The
Quarter-Pie Window (Marianne Brandis): 1986 I.O.D.E. Violet
Downey Children's Book Award and the 1986 Canadian Library Association
Young Adult Book Award.

Governor General's Awards
The following PQL books were short-listed for the Governor
General's Award for Fiction:

Other PQL Nominations
K.D. Miller's PQL collection, Give Me
Your Answer, was shortlisted for the inaugural Upper Canada Brewing
Company Writers' Craft Award given for the best collection of short fiction
written by an Ontario author in the past twelve months. Give
Me Your Answer was also shortlisted in the fiction category for a TORGI
Talking Book of the Year Award sponsored by the Canadian National Institute
for the Blind.
Kelley
Aitken's book, Love in a Warm Climate, was
a finalist for the Commonwealth Writers Prize (Caribbean & Canada Region,
First Book Category).
Linda
Holeman's PQL collection, Devil's Darning Needle,
was shortlisted for the McNally Robinson Book of the Year Award. This award
is a cash prize presented to the winner whose book is judged the best written
by a Manitoba author and published in 1999.
Michael
Winter's One Last Good Look was shortlisted
for the Newfoundland Provincial Book Award 2000. This award is given for
the best work of fiction in the past two years by a Newfoundland writer.
A new edition of One Last Good Look is forthcoming from the House
of Anansi.
Robyn Sarah's
collection of stories, Promise of Shelter,
was shortlisted for the 1998 Q-Spell award for the best English-language
fiction written by a Quebec author.
Antanas Sileika's Buying
on Time, was short-listed for the Stephen Leacock Medal and for
the City of Toronto Book Award.
Elizabeth
Hay's
Small Change (1997) was nominated
for Ontario's Trillium Award and the
Rogers Communications Writers Trust Prize.
Small Change is now available in a new edition from McClelland & Stewart.
Joel Yanofsky's
novel, Jacob's Ladder, was short-listed
for the 1997 Prix Parizeau and for the 1998 Grand prix du livre de Montréal.
City
of Orphans, a collection of stories by Patricia Robertson,
was nominated for the
1995 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize (British Columbia).
Russell Smith's
How
Insensitive was a finalist for the 1994 Trillium book award.
Steven Heighton's
Flight
Paths of the Emperor was short-listed for the 1992 Trillium book
award. Flight Paths of the Emperor is forthcoming in a new edition
from Random House Canada.

Metcalf was the winner of the 1997 National Magazine Award for Fiction
for his story, `Forde Abroad,' in the Fall 1996 issue of The
New Quarterly.
