Bad ImaginingsCaroline AddersonIn these ten short stories, Caroline Adderson adopts a brilliant array of perspectives ranging from that of a nineteenth-century prospector, to a chambermaid in WWI Victoria, to two long-time friends trying to sort out the eighties. The intensity of these deeply imagined stories is stunning. `Her stylistic bravura is breathtaking and
heartbreaking. It is hard to believe that such
passionate and mature writing can be found in a first
book; we predict for her national acclaim and a
distinguished career.' `Astonishing. There really isn't another word to
describe Caroline Adderson's first book, Bad
Imaginings, a collection of 10 stories so superior
it is almost impossible to believe the author is only
30 years old - though it is entirely possible to see
why she was recently nominated for a Governor
General's Award.... These often funny and always
adventurous stories are deeply felt and wildly
imagined tributes to our own fragile, blinkered lives.
And they fulfil the only real condition of art: they
make you feel richer for having read them.' `Bad Imaginings is the sort of book that
stays with a reader long after it has been closed. A
singular book, deep and mature. Caroline Adderson
deserves congratulations.' `Caroline Adderson's imaginings are about as far from bad
as imaginings can get. The stories in her debut collection are
powerfully conceived, subtly constructed, and amazingly diverse
in tone. Adopting the perspectives of a wildly eclectic group
of characters, her prose is always fresh: Adderson is as
comfortable in the boots of a
19th-century gold miner as she
is in the crocheted slippers of a sad and embittered grandmother.
And despite some very poignant moments, she is never
sentimental. ... A finalist for the Governor General's Award,
Bad Imaginings is the work of a young writer with confidence
and style.' `... a collection that challenges the soul as well
as the intellect.' `... wit, flair for language, and wickedly
uninhibited perception.' |

The Porcupine's Quill is remarkable in Canadian publishing in that most of the physical production
of our books is completed in-house at the shop on the Main Street of Erin Village.
We print on a twenty-five inch Heidelberg KORD, typically onto acid-free Zephyr Antique laid.
The sheets are then folded, and sewn into signatures on a 1907 model Smyth National Book Sewing machine.
