Dear Friends:

I prefer "practical" theology.

I am not one to spend hours reflecting upon and debating theories about doctrine when I can instead reflect on how the gospel affects this corner of the world in which I live, or what I can do in response to the message. Some refer to this as "living where the rubber meets the road".

As the members of our 8:00 family know, I like to ponder the theological insights of such gifted thinkers as Bill Cosby, Ellen Degeneres and even Charlie Brown. They appeal to me because they get straight to the heart of the matter and address it for what it is, rather than succumb to all the trappings of this world.

We have many "practical theologians" right here in our parish. Like you, every week I look forward to the message that will appear on our church sign. These are not my thoughts, but the thoughts of our parish historian, caretaker and resident theologian - Alf Brown. The two line messages he places on the sign speak volumes to our world, and that is proven by the positive comments and notes we receive from people each week. The most popular messages are those that "cut to the heart" of our faith - the messages that proclaim that God is present and alive, here in our midst... Often right under our very noses (my personal favourite was "If you are looking for a sign from God - here it is").

Alf is not alone. Many of you share his "practical theology" each and every day, as you celebrate the presence of God … and share that awareness with your family, friends, and neighbours (through word and actions).

Have a peaceful and blessed summer … and may you use these coming months to see and celebrate the God who fills our lives with goodness and wonder, each and every day.
