Second
2001-2005
The second
information, see the Atlas' web page at www.birdsontario.org.
Over 30 Regional Coordinators are already
in place (see map on web page),
and some regions already have all or most of
their squares assigned! So
don't delay if you want to get the square(s)
of your choice. Applications to
cover remote northern areas will be on the
web site in the next few days.
Field work won't really get started until
next spring's breeding season, but
planning is already underway.
The Atlas basically consists of a huge
inventory of the breeding birds of
the province, with most of the data provided
by volunteer birders. The
project runs from 2001 through 2005. It will
result in a book, a CD-ROM and
a website database with information on the
distribution and status of all
the birds that breed in the province. The
Atlas is really about the birders
of this period enjoying themselves birding
while documenting the status and
distribution of the province's birds for
comparison to similar efforts from
the past (1981-1985) and the future -
hopefully every 20 years. You could
say it's a legacy for use by future
generations. It provides a wealth of
information for researchers and
conservationists to learn more about and
conserve our birds.
Atlassing involves looking for birds in
10-km squares during their breeding
season. Although we want as many experienced
birders as possible to
participate in the project, you don't have
to be an expert to get involved -
as long as you are careful only to report
birds that you know are properly
identified. Some people take on one or more
squares and try to find all the
species breeding in them, which is
challenging and exciting. Others are more
casual about it, submitting information on
interesting breeding birds from
wherever they find them. Large-scale
involvement is necessary to meet the
project's ambitious goals, but atlassing is
enjoyable enough that we're
confident we can do it - so long as we all
work together.
