New Neotropical bird discovered, in Ecuador

The Acadamy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia has announced the discovery by Robert Ridgely of a new species of Antpitta. The bird was found in temperate forest at about 11.000 ft. near the Loja-Zamora road, near Podocarpus National Park.

Its distinctive features are its large size (one of the largest birds to be discovered in the last 50 years), unique voice (Ridgely likened it to a dog's bark, in combination with the vocalization of an owl), and white facial markings.

Although it was found on private land in a fairly remote area, Ridgely hopes the discovery leads to preservation of the bird's habitat, since it is likely the land will be deforested and cleared, possibly endangering the new species.

Let's hope we don't need another action as was necessary for that other recently described species, the Tall-grass Wetland Tapaculo of Parana, Brazil.
