KWFN HISTORY

To date the earliest records of a Naturalists' Club reveal that  at least by 1903 a Twin City Nature Study Club existed when L. R. Clarke issued a "Membership Ticket" to Mr. Frank A. Shantz.

From the Berlin News Record, Thursday, June 12, 1913

ORGANIZED BURROUGH'S NATURE STUDY CLASS
The Burrough's Nature Club was duly organized last evening and the following officers were elected to serve during the comiong year.
President -- Prof. J.F. Carmichael
Vice Pres. -- Mrs. J. F. Hilliard
Secy- Treas. -- Mrs. Mabel Whiteman
The Club will meet regularly at the Public Library on the first Thursday evening of each month.
The club will endeavor to promote a strong sentiment in the town in favor of od sonf birds, flowers, shrubs and trees.
Albert HoughtonPratt of Brooklyn, NY, and late of the American Museum of Natural History will lecture to the club, Thursday, Sept. 25th.  Subject, "The Birds Our Protectors."


The KWFN was founded on May 10th, 1934. In 1935, it became affiliated with the Federation of Ontario Naturalists. The KWFN disbanded from October 1942 until the end of WWII when it was reorganized in January, 1946. In 1957, "The Heron" was chosen as the club's publication. In September 1969, the KWFN became incorporated. Over the years, the KWFN is proud that it has been able to purchase four properties, some of which are now owned and managed by the Grand River Conservation Authority (*)

1962 - F. W. R. Dickson Wilderness Area *
This 84-acre property is located in the northern edge of Carolinian Canada and contains over 200 plant species in the hardwood forest, tamarack bog, wetlands, ponds, and meadows. It is located just off west of Highway 24A on north side of the Brant/Waterloo boundary.

1966 - Bannister Marsh and Wrigley Lake*
Totaling nearly 110 acres, this property located at Highway 24A between Cambridge and Ayr features open water, wetlands, sedge-cattails, alders and deciduous trees. Many species of waterfowl, passerines, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and plants have been recorded.

1968 - Founders' Property
Renamed in 1984 at the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the KWFN, this 12-acre part of Roseville Swamp is located behind the KW Police Recreation Centre just south of the 401 but north of Cecil Cornwell P.S. Flora and fauna typical to this area are abundant, and rare plants have been preserved on the site. Visitors should contact club members to access this property since the property does not have direct road access.

1970 - F. H. Montgomery Wildlife Sanctuary
This property is located 9 km. west of new Dundee on Bridge St. (Wilmot Rd. #19) on the south side just before the bridge over the Nith river. This 18-acre property is famous for white trout lily, bladdernut, twinleaf and many nesting and migratory bird species.
