"VACATION IN FRANCE"

We live in England and thought you might like to hear about our vacation in France.

We took a couple of weeks and we stayed with friends part of the time. They live right down in the South of France, in the Pyrenees. It is quite a long drive down and we didn't want to rush, so we spent a couple of days travelling each way. We decided to drive until mid-afternoon then found a nice bed and breakfast place to spend the night and relax.

I have included some photographs of the places we passed. Click on the headings to see our pictures:-

First Picture: Port de Lers - popular for hang gliding.

Second Picture: Goats coming down from the mountain.

Third Picture: The river Ariege.

Fourth Picture: A waterfall high up in the Pyrenees.

Fifth Picture: Us on a picnic in the Pyrenees.

Sixth Picture: A B&B where we stayed in the Charente region.

We found some comfortable places to stay - one was an old chateau, but it wasn't at all "posh", just a family home. The lady lived there with three of her children and a couple of grandchildren. It was such an interesting house and she made us feel very welcome. We told her that we liked the wine she served at dinner and next morning she gave us two bottles to take with us!

Our friends live in Foix, which is right at the foot of the Pyrenean mountains. The scenery is fantastic. We went for lots of walks in the mountains, where there are so many flowers and birds of prey. Our friend is building his own house - very hard work, but it will be worth it in the end, as it is in a lovely situation with views down through the valley.

Regarding bed and breakfast in France: it can be really economical (much better value than in England). We paid about £30 per night for TWO people, breakfast included. Dinner is usually with the family and the cost varies, but usually we paid about £10 each. This includes wine. The standards of the places where we stayed have been very high. They usually have en-suite bathroom and are always spotless. The guide we use is Alistair Sawday's Guide to French Bed and Breakfast. It's an excellent guide. Each property has a photo and a good description of the sort of accommodation and usually something about the owners. The descriptions have been accurate for each place we stayed. I know the Guide is published in the United States, so perhaps you can find it in Canada. It is quite entertaining to read - it makes you want to visit all the properties. In one place there was a couple from Kentucky U.S.A. who were travelling around France using the Guide.

That's all for now. Keep writing!

Gill
