Notes. This page is basically just a list of the books I've been reading, along with descriptions of and/or comments on each. The list isn't in any particular order except (roughly) the order in which the books were read. It may get indexed at some point if it gets too long, but for now it shouldn't be too painful to wade through to find specific topics, genres, authors, etc. The comments on the first few books are kind of long, but they should get briefer after that.
Comments. Suggestions, comments and the like are welcome and encouraged.
A very readable introduction to the mathematics used to describe and reason about programming languages and their features. It assumes some degree of familiarity with algebra and set theory, but more specialized topics like abstract language syntax, the theory of functionals and the lambda calculus are fully explained. The theories of both denotational and axiomatic semantics are then developed and are used to describe the semantics of several simplified but realistic imperative programming languages.
As in other books by Meyer (including Object-Oriented Software Construction and Eiffel: the Language), the material is presented exceptionally well: the organization and structure of the information has been carefully thought out, important terms are clearly and unambiguously defined, and the writing is clear, concise and highly readable.
Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software
Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson, John Vlissides
Addison-Wesley, 1995
An experienced object-oriented programmer will have used instances of most of the design patterns presented in this book at some point, but may not have recognized them as patterns that are repeated over and over again in the course of object-oriented software design.
The majority of this book is a catalog of twenty of the more common patterns that show up in object-oriented design, providing information on when to use each pattern, outlining what the advantages and the disadvantages of using a given pattern are, and illustrating techniques for implementing each design pattern. The example code is in both C++ and Smalltalk, with an emphasis on the former.
The part of the book preceding the catalog of designs, while slight, also puts forward some valuable ideas. It suggests that rather than take the catalog as just a closed set of patterns, it should also be seen as an example of how more catalogs can be developed to collect other design patterns for reuse. It also suggests that patterns be given representative names (such as are given to the patterns in the catalog) that can be used both as a shorthand to facilitate communication among software designers, and as a means to think about software development at a higher level of abstraction.

Scott Fitzgerald; Henry Miller; Kurt Vonnegut; Winnie-the-Pooh; the Marquis de Sade; William S.
